A number of Branches and members have ordered these cards. Now’s the time to pass them out at your Farmers Market, local Home Depot or garden store where Roundup is currently being featured for garden care. Write a Letter to the Editor  on why  H.R. 1599 the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015 that is before Congress must be stopped. Dubbed the DARK – Deny Americans the Right to Know -  Act, if Congress passes this bill, states will lose the right to pass GMO labeling laws, and Monsanto will have the right to keep consumers in the dark. WILPF’s Human Right to Health and Safe Food campaign makes clear that Monsanto makes us and our children sick.  Why should anyone be an experimental subject.

The toxic herbicide glyphosate, an active ingredient in Roundup, used on GMO Roundup-ready crops, for home garden care and on city parks, has just been described as “probably carcinogenic to humans” by the World Health Organization.

1. Glyphosate does accumulate in our bodies, though Monsanto claims it does not. After 10-plus years of research and newly published reports, glyphosate has been found in the breast milk of nursing mothers and urine collected from people living far from where Roundup is used on crops. There is not yet definitive evidence to show causality, BUT glyphosate is linked to serious and life-threatening birth defects, and many early childhood to old age diseases,   including cancers, and it is shown to be an endocrine disruptor. Trace amounts of glyphosate have been found in food.  

2. Monsanto wants to end our right to know what’s in our food. As Jim Hightower, says, “If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu.”  Monsanto helped organize the Grocery Manufacturers of America and pushed them to sue Vermont for their new GMO labelling law. Monsanto is desperate to stop Vermont and deny we the people our voice. If we can stop Monsanto in Vermont, we can start winning in every other state.

3. Monsanto is among almost 600 corporations “at the table” negotiating the secret Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement written by and for multinational corporations like Monsanto. The TPP will allow a foreign multi-national company (a Monsanto subsidiary or other foreign corporate ag and food producers) to challenge our GMO and country of origin food labelling laws and weaken food inspection standards.
